Director:

Carole Palmer is director of CIRSS and associate professor of library and information science. Her research focuses on improving information access and use for scientists, humanities scholars, and interdisciplinary researchers. Her current projects include investigations of the impact of interoperability on representation of digital collections (DCC), institutional repository development (IMIRD), and scientific information work and collaboration.

Affiliated Faculty:

  • Cathy Blake conducts research on both human and automated processes surrounding information synthesis and discovery.
  • J. Stephen Downie has research interests that intersect with both the digital humanities and scientific communication at CIRSS and has worked recently in multimedia music information retrieval.
  • David Dubin is a research professor whose interests are in the foundations of information representation and description.
  • Miles Efron's research areas are information retrieval, text mining, computational modeling of subjective aspects of documents (e.g., bias, emotion, opinion), information access in specialized domains, such as institutional repositories, and in mobile settings. He is currently working on a project about improving information retrieval and discovery in institutional repositories.
  • Kathryn La Barre researches the integration of facets into search and discovery systems.  She is currently developing the Folktales, Facets and FRBR project.

  • W. John MacMullen investigates information creation and use behaviors, with a focus on biomedical information resources and services. His current work studies biocurators and the Gene Ontology.

  • Jerome McDonough conducts research on the preservation of digital information and the development of metadata for digital library systems.  He is the principal investigator for the Preserving Virtual Worlds project and the INFORM digital file format risk assessment project being conducted under the auspices of the Library of Congress' National Digital Information Infrastructure for Preservation Program.
  • Allen H. Renear conducts research on formal ontologies (including metadata) in science and the humanities and is currently exploring strategies for using these ontologies to improve scientific communication and publishing.

  • Linda C. Smith, professor and associate dean, is associated with CIRSS through her work with e-Science as Co-PI for the Digital Curation Education Program (DCEP)—a component of her larger research interest in orienting students to handle scientific information.
  • Carol Tilley studies children's print culture, but she also has research interests in information seeking and use, especially within the contexts of teaching and learning. She is currently developing the Folktales, Facets, and FRBR project.
  • Michael Twidale's research interests in computer-supported working and collaborative technologies intersect with CIRSS research areas of collections and metadata, scientific communication, and digital humanities.
  • John M. Unsworth, dean at GSLIS, is heavily involved in the digital humanities and collections & metadata components of CIRSS as a principal investigator for the MONK, NORA, BRAIN, and ECHO DEPository projects.

Affiliated Researchers:

  • Sayeed Choudhury, associate director of library digital programs at the Johns Hopkins Sheridan Libraries, has been appointed a research fellow at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Graduate School of Library and Information Science. He will serve as one of six research fellows during his two-year term, which begins in August 2007.
  • Timothy Cole is the Interim Head of Digital Services & Development, Mathematics Librarian and Professor of Library Administration at UIUC. He is the Principal Investigator of IMLS Digital Collections & Content project. Cole is a current member of the OAI-ORE Liaison Group and a past member of the OAI-PMH Technical Committee. He is an expert in XML and related technologies such as XSLT, in the use and development of metadata schemas, and in other facets of digital library system design and implementation.
  • P. Bryan Heidorn is the Director of the School of Information Resources and Library Science at the University of Arizona. He researches scientific information extraction as well as information infrastructure to integrate scientists' data, sensor data, and citizen participation in biodiversity informatics in assoication with e-Science.

  • William Mischo is the Head of Grainger Engineering Library and Information Center and Professor of Library Administration at UIUC. Mischo was the Principal Investigator of the Illinois Digital Library Initiative and D-Lib Test Suite projects, and Co-Principal Investigator of the IMLS Digital Collections and Content project. He is an expert in XML, reference linking systems, simultaneous search systems, and end-user interface design for library applications.
  • Mark Newton is the Digital Collections Librarian at Purdue University and a former research assistant at CIRSS on the Mellon Foundation grant to study institutional repository development. He is the manager of the e-Pubs digital repository at Purdue, and his research interests include issues pertaining to scholarly publishing, library identities, and access to research.
  • Sarah Shreeves is the Coordinator for the Illinois Digital Environment for Access to Learning and Scholarship (IDEALS), the institutional repository at UIUC. She is the editor of the Digital Library Federation's Best Practices for OAI Data Provider Implementations and Shareable Metadata.
