Co-Director Leigh Estabrook has extensive
knowledge about library issues and survey
research drawn from over 30 years as teacher,
consultant, speaker, dean, and librarian. She
brings this knowledge to her design of surveys
and in her experienced moderation of focus
groups.
Estabrook is also a full-time University of
Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) faculty
member with dual appointments in the Graduate
School for Library and Information Science
(GSLIS) and the Department of Sociology. From
1986 to 2001 she was dean of GSLIS at UIUC.
During that time, GSLIS was ranked first among
library and information science schools in the
United States, and the school began its
award-winning distance education component in
its professional master's degree program.
Professor Estabrook is the author of almost 50
journal articles. She is a frequent consultant
to library vendors and academic and public
libraries. Among her recent grant-funded
projects are a study of "The Book as the Gold
Standard for Promotion and Tenure in the
Humanities and Social Sciences" funded by the
Mellon Foundation and the study "Institute on
Outcomes Based Evaluation" funded by the
Institute of Museum and Library Services. She
is currently a consultant for the Pennsylvania
Office of Commonwealth Libraries to evaluate
their LSTA grants.
Dr. Estabrook received her PhD from Boston
University in sociology, her MS in library
science from Simmons College, and her AB in
history from Northwestern University. In 2002
she received the Beta Phi Mu Award from the
American Library Association for "distinguished
service to education for librarianship." In
2003 she was awarded the Association for
Library and Information Science Award for
professional contributions to library and
information science education.
