The Investigative Journalism Education Consortium Develop the next generation of investigative journalists who can make the best use of the new digital tools.Coordinator: Brant Houston See Also: Project Announcement Brant Houston, a professor in the College of Media and GSLIS affiliated faculty member, will coordinate a $75,000 grant from the McCormick Foundation that will create a consortium of Midwest university journalism professors for public service reporting. The project initially will include universities in four states—Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Iowa. The Investigative Journalism Education Consortium (IJEC) will produce investigative stories that not only serve as a model for strong, practical educational classes but also deliver important public service stories to millions of citizens in the region, including major cities such as Chicago. Houston, who holds the Knight Chair in Investigative and Enterprise Reporting, said that the group recognized the increasing need for regional public service stories because of dramatic cuts at traditional news organizations during the past decade. Many news organizations now are focusing on local or hyper-local issues, having closed or sharply reduced state and regional bureaus. |
